“Missing EU Already” Rally. Edinburgh, January 2020.

On the evening the UK left the EU, there was a large pro-EU rally outside the Scottish Parliament at Holyrood. I had intended to stay most of the evening, but only last an hour and a half or so. The rally had morphed from a remembrance and celebration of the EU into a full-on independence rally – very understandable, but it wasn’t necessarily what I was after.

There were good speeches by several SNP politicians – Joanna Cherry, Mike Russell (for the second time that day), Alyn Smith and Tommy Sheppard; Smith and Sheppard were particularly good, as they usually are.

A massed choir (and much of the rally) sang Auld Lang Syne and the Ode to Joy, provoking tears in many of the crowd, after which I decided to go. It was all a bit too much.

I couldn’t photograph the speakers. There were flags – lots of flags – so I photographed them instead. The flags had a lot to say.
