Some photographs from my second visit to the Nice Jazz Festival (“Grande Parade du Jazz”) at in the Roman ruins at Cimiez, Nice. (Here are my pictures from the previous year, 1976.)

Tommy Smith Sextet. The Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh, c1986-1990.

These photographs confuse me. I have no recollection of the gig in the slightest, and I didn’t record the date. The backdrop shows the Queens Hall.

Tommy Smith said by email that he put the sextet together before recording Paris, which was released in 1992 – but that only adds to my confusion because I wasn’t living in Edinburgh at that time!

I can’t think how I could have forgotten such a good line up – Tommy, Steve Williamson and Julian Arguelles on saxes, Guy Barker on trumpet, Terje Gewelt on bass and, Tommy’s email said, Jason Rebello on piano. I think it looks like Ian Froman on drums behind Tommy in one of the pictures.

Trumpeter Colin Steele was in negatives on the same film; Tommy Smith says he’s never had Colin in his band, so I presume that Colin was providing the support.

Nice Jazz Festival, July 1976.

For several years, my father went to the Nice Jazz Festival, set amongst the Roman ruins at Cimiez. In 1976 and 1977, it coincided with our family holiday. I wasn’t much of a jazz fan as a teenager: a week of jazz at Nice was sufficient for a whole year. (It was a few years before I really got gripped.) But I did take quite a few photographs (a habit which has stayed).

John Scofield. Town & Country Club, Camden Jazz Festival, March (?) 1990.

This was the first time I had seen John Scofield play, in a band featuring Joe Lovano on tenor (the first time I saw him, too), though I don’t appear to have any pictures of him. I think the drummer – seen behind Scofield in a couple of shots – is a young Bill Stweart. This gig was part of Scofield’s tour promoting the very fine “Time on my Hands”. It was a great gig!

Jazz Photos from my past: “Archive Photographs”.

I have been taking photographs at jazz gigs for nearly forty years: the first jazz photos I took were at the Nice Jazz Festival in 1977. I took a lot of photos at gigs between 1984 or 1985 and 1994 – on black and white film back then.

I have thousands of negatives, and I have an ongoing project to scan them. I have started with photos from gigs, and I’ll be uploading them over the next few weeks, and posting them to this blog.

I doubt that I shall write about these gigs, it being too long ago, though some of them I can remember clearly. Others I have no recollection of at all – it is only through seeing the photos that I know I was there.

So you may well notice pictures of thirty year old gigs being posted, with the tag archive jazz photographs. You can also see them over on my “culture” blog, On The Beat.
